A Bev Facey high school student will be recognized this weekend for earning Advanced Placement Scholar awards.
The awards are part of the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) program, which provides credit for college-level courses taken while in high school in a variety of subjects.
Jeremy Fife will be honoured at the annual AP Conference, being held at West Edmonton Mall on Saturday.
Fife is in his first year studying engineering at the University of Alberta.
Two other students, Braden Kowalyk and Thomas Flesher, were acknowledged for their accomplishments at a Bev Facey gala last week.
"These three students are exceptional individuals with very bright futures. We are very proud of their efforts and wish them the best of luck on their academic journeys," said Peter Barron, Bev Facey's principal.
Fife will receive the National AP Scholar award and the AP Scholar with Distinction award for scoring an average of 4 (out of 5) on the AP exams he took. He also scored no lower than 4 on at least five exams.
Last week, Kowalyk was honoured by Bev Facey for scoring at least a 3.5 average on the AP exams he took. He also scored no lower than 3 on at least five AP exams.
Flesher was also honoured by the school last week for scoring at least a 3.25 on all this AP exams. He scored no lower than 3 on no less than four exams.
During the 2008-2009 school year, 36 Bev Facey students wrote 45 AP exams.
Ninety-two per cent of those students scored higher than a 3, with 27 per cent of students getting a grade of 5, according to Elk Island Public Schools.
"Participation in the AP program can really give students an edge in the college admission process, and achieving AP Scholar status is no small feat. The three Bev Facey (award and honour) recipients have all indicated they plan to use the university-equivalent credit to pursue their post-secondary interests," said Aaron Kowalchuk, Bev Facey's AP program co-ordinator.
About 60 per cent of students at Bev Facey who took an AP exam last year will receive university-equivalent credit.
