Nominations open for Pride awards

Jalna Mylod won the 2008 Mayor s Award as part of the Strathcona Pride Awards.

The Pride of Strathcona Awards need nominees.

Individuals and groups who have made an outstanding achievement or contribution to the community can be nominated for the award program until Jan. 31.

Mayor Cathy Olesen is asking for nominations from the community.

"We need you to let us know so we can recognize them and their accomplishments," Olesen said.

Categories for the award range from arts and culture, athletics, contributions to community life and professional achievement.

Nominees can be anyone from children to seniors, from rural Strathcona County or from Sherwood Park. The achievement could be a one-time occurrence or taken place over a period of time.

The achievement or contribution could be well known, or not known at all.

"There are a lot of people in the county who have done and are doing amazing things," Olesen said. "We want to give them this special recognition while we also showcase the causes that inspire them."

Award recipients this past year included David Doucette, Celeste Dusdal, Dawson Forester, Elk Island Regional Honour Choirs, Judith Anne Gray, Hearts and Hooves, Joshua Lavin, Benjamin Lavin, Debbie Mohn, Northline Angus and Billie Jo and Micki Lee Smith.

Previous reeve and Mayor's Award recipients — the most prestigious of the Pride awards — include Barbara and Eric Cormack, J.D. Morrow, Bill Warwick Sr., Reg Gray, Roger Parker, Joy Finlay, Eileen Stannard, Sheila Abercrombie, Terry Walsh, Kristine Lucas, Judy Diduck, Bremner Friendship Club, the 2000 Alberta Winter Games organizing committee, Glenda Sheard, Randy Ferbey and his curling team, Dr. Brent Saik, Bruce Bowie, John Ashton, Chris Kieser, Carol Gibney, Jalna Mylod, and Hearts and Hooves.
